A knock down and rebuild is only viable if your property is not protected by a covenant or regulation that prevents it from being demolished. You’ll need to check with your local council (or similar governing body) before you consider knocking down your old home. 

Conducting a knock down and rebuild project requires additional planning and resources, including:

• Determining if your property can be demolished, and applying for permission if needed 
• Emptying and preparing your home for demolition, including stripping it of materials that may be sold or recycled 
• Erecting fences and other safety equipment 
• Safely demolishing the property, including safe removal of hazardous materials such as asbestos
• Disposing of unwanted materials
• Preparing the ground for your new home
